The GLP-1 Grocery List: What to Buy When Your Appetite Shrinks

Updated June 15, 2026 Β· 8 min read

When You Eat Less, Every Bite Counts More

One of the first things GLP-1 patients notice is that their appetite shrinks β€” sometimes dramatically. Meals that used to feel normal now feel enormous. Snacking disappears. Some days you realize it is 2 p.m. and you have barely eaten.

This is the medication working. But it creates a new challenge: when you are eating significantly less food overall, you need to make sure what you do eat is packed with the nutrients your body needs. This is not about restriction β€” it is about nutrition density.

The Protein-First Shopping List

The ADA's 2026 guidance for GLP-1 patients is clear: protein comes first. Aim for 1.0-1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (roughly 80-110 grams for most adults). Here is what to stock:

High-Protein Staples

Fiber and Vegetables

Hydration and Electrolytes

The "rough day" shelf:

Keep these on hand for days when nausea is worse or nothing sounds appealing: bone broth, plain crackers, applesauce, ginger tea, popsicles. Getting through a tough side-effect day with some calories and hydration is better than eating nothing.

What to Buy Less Of

You do not need to ban any food. But because your total intake is smaller, foods with little nutritional value take up a bigger percentage of your daily nutrition. Naturally, most GLP-1 patients find they are less interested in high-sugar, high-fat foods anyway β€” but it helps to not have them front-and-center in your kitchen.

A Sample Day of Eating

Morning: Greek yogurt with berries and a scoop of protein powder (35g protein)

Lunch: Rotisserie chicken over salad greens with avocado (30g protein)

Afternoon: Cottage cheese with sliced cucumber (14g protein)

Dinner: Salmon with roasted broccoli and sweet potato (25g protein)

Total: ~104g protein. Achievable, even with a reduced appetite.
