You lost 15 pounds in the first three months. Then 5 more in month four. Then the scale stopped. For two weeks. Then three. It's normal, it's biological, and it doesn't mean your medication stopped working.
Why Plateaus Happen
Metabolic adaptation is the primary driver. As you lose weight, your body requires fewer calories to function. A person who weighed 220 pounds burns significantly more calories at rest than the same person at 190 pounds. At some point, your reduced caloric intake matches your reduced caloric expenditure โ and weight loss stalls.

Other contributing factors:
- Dose plateau: Your current dose has maxed out its appetite-suppressing effect for your body. You may need a dose increase to continue progress.

- Fluid retention: Hormonal fluctuations, sodium intake changes, and even weather can cause water retention that masks ongoing fat loss.
- Unconscious calorie creep: As appetite suppression normalizes, portions and snacking can gradually increase without noticing.
How to Break Through
1. Talk to Your Provider About Dose Adjustment

2. Audit Your Protein Intake
If you've let protein slip, muscle loss may be driving metabolic slowdown. Recommit to 0.7โ1.0g per pound of body weight daily. Track it for one week to see where you actually land.
3. Add or Intensify Resistance Training
Cardio burns calories in the moment. Resistance training builds muscle that burns calories at rest. If you're only doing cardio (walking, cycling), adding 2โ3 resistance sessions per week can shift the plateau by increasing your resting metabolic rate.
4. Check Your Non-Scale Metrics
The scale measures total body weight โ fat, muscle, water, food in your digestive system. During a plateau, you may be losing fat while gaining muscle or retaining water. Track waist circumference, how your clothes fit, and progress photos. These often show continued progress when the scale doesn't.
5. Consider a Medication Switch
