This Is a Big Deal
For years, Medicare explicitly did not cover medications for weight loss. That left millions of older Americans β the fastest-growing group of people interested in GLP-1 medications β paying completely out of pocket or simply going without. Starting July 1, 2026, that changes.
The CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a new demonstration program that gives eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries access to FDA-approved GLP-1 medications. It runs through December 31, 2027, and the data collected will help determine whether permanent coverage follows.
Who Qualifies?
To be eligible, you need to meet three criteria:
- You are enrolled in Medicare Part D.
- You have a qualifying diagnosis: obesity (BMI of 30 or above) or overweight (BMI of 27 or above) with at least one weight-related health condition like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea.
- Your doctor submits a prior authorization through the CMS central processing system.
How to Get Started
If you think you or someone you love may qualify, here is what to do:
- Schedule an appointment with your doctor β or a telehealth provider who works with Medicare β and let them know you want to discuss the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.
- Bring your Medicare Part D information and any recent lab work you have.
- Make sure your chart includes all weight-related diagnoses β not just your BMI, but conditions like hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, or joint problems. These strengthen the prior authorization.
Helping a parent or loved one?
Many people learn about GLP-1 medications from their adult children. If you are helping a parent navigate this, offer to go to the appointment with them or help them prepare their medical records. The prior authorization process is standardized through CMS β your loved one does not need to figure it out alone.
What Medications Are Covered?
The Bridge covers FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for weight management, including injectable Wegovy, the Wegovy pill, Zepbound (tirzepatide), and the newly approved Wegovy HD 7.2mg. Compounded GLP-1 medications are not covered under this program.
What Will It Cost?
Cost-sharing follows standard Part D rules with some modifications. The exact out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan, but it will be dramatically less than the retail price of $1,300+ per month. If cost has been the barrier keeping you or a loved one from starting treatment, this program was designed specifically to address that.
