Your Medication Can Travel — It Just Needs a Little Planning
Summer trips should be fun, not stressful. If you are on a GLP-1 medication, a little preparation means you can travel without worrying about your treatment. Here is everything you need to know.
Temperature Rules
Injectable GLP-1s (Wegovy, Zepbound) must stay refrigerated (36-46°F) before first use. After first use, they can be at room temperature up to 86°F for 28 days (semaglutide) or 21 days (tirzepatide). The critical number is 86°F — and a car on a summer day can hit 130°F within 30 minutes.
GLP-1 pills (Wegovy pill, orforglipron) should stay below 86°F and be protected from moisture. Keep them in their original packaging until you are ready to take them.
If your pen got too warm:
Do not use it. There is no way to tell by looking at the pen whether heat has degraded the medication. Contact your pharmacy about a replacement. Better safe than ineffective.
Quick Travel Checklist
- TSA: Injectable medications are allowed through security. Declare them at the checkpoint. Medical liquids are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule.
- Always carry-on. Never put injectable GLP-1s in checked luggage. Cargo holds experience temperature extremes.
- Bring a travel cooler. Insulated medication cases with gel packs designed for the 36-46°F range are inexpensive and fit in a purse or backpack.
- Time zones: For weekly injections, a few hours of variation is fine. For daily pills, try to keep roughly 24 hours between doses.
- Refills: If your trip is longer than your current supply, arrange refills before you leave. Some telehealth providers can ship to alternative addresses.
- International travel: Carry a letter from your prescriber stating your diagnosis and medication. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are approved in most countries.
Summer-Specific Reminders
- Drink more water. GLP-1 side effects like nausea and diarrhea increase fluid loss. Add summer heat and activity, and dehydration risk goes up significantly.
- Go easy on alcohol. GLP-1s slow gastric emptying, which can change how quickly alcohol affects you. Start with less than your usual amount at summer events.
- Sunscreen still matters more than anything. This has nothing to do with your medication — it is just good advice. 😊
